Scoreboard Podcast Episode 55: Darius Boyd – Finding Balance Beyond the Game
In Episode 55 of Scoreboard, former NRL star Darius Boyd reflects on a journey that began on the Gold Coast and took him to premierships, State of Origin, and leadership roles with the Broncos. Now a father of four, Boyd shares what life looks like after the final whistle—and how his relationship with the game has evolved.
“I wouldn’t say I’m busy. I think I’ve got a pretty flexible schedule that I’m very grateful for… I can pick up and take the kids to school most days.”
Since retiring, he’s stepped into new roles—across property development, coaching, community outreach, and mental health work.
“There’s a lot of stuff in the mental health space. A little bit of work for the Broncos in their community programs. A little bit of rugby league coaching… I’m enjoying my time.”
Boyd’s connection to rugby league is now more relaxed—but still meaningful.
“Since I’ve retired, I’ve definitely become a fan again… I sit in front of the TV and watch all the games like I did when I was a kid.”
He grew up idolising Wendell Sailor and dreaming of the Broncos.
“Wendell Saylor was my favourite player. Pretty cool I got to play with him at the Dragons.”
Although he wasn’t a junior standout, his rise was fast once the opportunity came.
“I didn’t make Queensland schoolboys until Year 12. Wayne [Bennett] picked me for Round 1 the next year. I was 18.”
That first game is still one of his proudest memories.
“I scored the only try in my debut… even though we lost by 30, having my grandmother flown in by the club meant the world.”
His Scoreboard moment isn’t just one game—it’s the lifestyle and family time he now enjoys after rugby.
“It’s about being present. I’m grateful for where I am now.”
